Bear Claws

While participating in the program, each father and son will attempt to earn various colored bear claws for completing certain achievements, as listed below.  The goal being to earn all 9 of the regular claws, and the 3 Haylushka claws, in order to earn the honor of being called Haylushka

Regular Claws

Achievement / How to Earn the Claw:

Purple Claw:

Starter claw - Thanks for joining! You will receive this claw at your first Tribe meeting.

Green Claw:

Campout - Attend a Nation campout in the fall, winter, or spring.

Blue Claw:   

Nature Report- Father and son take a nature walk through a forest preserve or the woods at a Nation Campout and report back to the tribe what you observed (e.g. animal tracks found, animal sounds heard, foliage and plant life observed, etc.)

Brown Claw:   

Recruiting - Recruit a new father and son to join your tribe or another tribe in your Nation, or march in a local parade (i.e. 4th of July, St. Patrick's Day, Memorial Day) and promote the program by distributing promotional materials/flyers.

White Claw:   

Craft - Father and son host a meeting at their house, and/or make a craft project for the tribe. This project becomes a part of the tribal property.  Some examples include making an award for a Nation campout, planning/providing a craft project to be made by everyone at a monthly tribe meeting, making or repairing a tribal drum/sign, making a tribal wampum pouch, making a tribal flag, etc.

Orange Claw:   

Rituals - Be able to recite the Nation rituals (6 Aims, Pledge, and Slogan) from memory.

Black Claw:   

Song - Learn, and be able to recite from memory, the "Pals Forever" song.

Red Claw:   

Tribal Visit - Attend a meeting of another tribe, then make a report to your tribe about the points of interest from the meeting (i.e. similarities to and/or differences from what your tribe does in its meetings).

Yellow Claw:   

Names - Know and recite both the real names and the program names of all of the fathers and sons of your tribe who are present at either a monthly tribe meeting or nation event.

Black Claw:   

Community Service - Organize a community service event, or participate in a community service event (separate and apart from any service event planned by or affiliated with your tribe/nation or the Federation).  Be prepared to report on the event and answer questions relating to the "who, where, what, why and how" of the event(s) and how your participation made a positive impact on someone else's life, in your community, or in nature.

  Natural/Light Tan Claw:   

Sign the Aims - Be able to recite the six Aims from memory, and sign each of the Aims using ASL sign language, in front of the Hay-lush-ka Counsel.

Brown Claw:

10 Articles of Nature - Collect 10 articles of nature, mount them on 4"x6" index cards, write the name of each article on the back, and be able to identify each article from memory, when chosen at random by members of the Hay-lush-ka Counsel.
